Mrs Landingham in The West Wing. Out of the blue, a senseless but believable accident with some of the best writing in TV history. A no-nonsense adorable woman who had suffered so much personal loss but still wanted to serve. Dr Janet Frazier in Stargate. Heroes Parts 1 and 2 is an incredibly well-written story with a real painful end. The way it was covered, and the sense of loss shown and felt was enough to have me blubbing like a baby... Both of the sons in The Patriot. Somehow, the fact that their father repeatedly told them not to join the war and that they both died for their cause honorably, but pointlessly got to me. I think I just can't handle children dying before their parents cause now that I'm older I empathize more with the parents now. But honestly the part that gets me in tears every time in that movie is when the mute daughter finally speaks to her dad and says "Don't go Daddy, I'll say anything you want, just don't go away, please Daddy!" Flowey during the genocide route. In neutral and pacifist, he’s confident that he can kill you, but in genocide he just realizes that he can’t do anything to you. He was used to having control over everything in the world, just like the player is, but now that he’s in actual danger you can see the Asriel inside him. ash from banana fish. he went through so much trauma his entire life and was finally able to meet his soulmate but then he let himself slowly bleed to death because he felt like he would be a burden to eiji (his soulmate) if he were alive. I was about 3 years old when my mom took me to see E.T. The part after they captured him and the little light on the tip of his finger went out and we thought he was dead destroyed me! Lol. Her death isn’t totally unexpected by time you get to that point, but it’s REALLY sad. She just wanted the best for her classmates and best friend, and even towards the end she kept fighting so hard for something that was never meant to be. Allie and Noah in The Notebook. When they both go together and you see them in the bed, it broke me so hard. Never cried like that in my life, even to this day and I saw it for the first time almost 6 years ago. My family has Alzheimer’s running through my dads side, and he’s probably going to start showing signs within the next 10-20 years. He turns 50 this year. The Red wedding, a storm of swords. When i first read the line of Catelyn Stark feeling Roose Boltons arm, and that under his tunic was chainmail i just tossed the book. I knew what was going to happen. I picked it up shortly after, hoping they were going to take them hostage. How wrong i was. And from Arya's perspective seeing his Brothers body mutilated like that? He's driven mad by Sauron's influence through the palantir, but doesn't do the crazy shit he does in the movies. He still tries to fight, but in the end is overwhelmed with despair and renounces his Stewardship of Gondor and self-immolates. That dude had the weight and future of an entire country on his shoulders, and while there were moments of weakness where the ring and the desire to save Gondor got the better of him, he still gave his life for the group while defending 2 hobbits instead of following Denethor’s corrupt desire for power by taking the ring. Her arc of discovering what it truly meant to be human was so amazing to watch and the fact that it was in her last stand that she figured it out just made me so happy and sad at the same time. No matter how many times I watch the show I end up in hysteric tears at her death. And it’s even worse bc I for some reason thought she was going to be alright when I first watched. Kyoko Sakura from Puella Magi Madoka Magica. She had a horrible childhood, ruined her life with her own wish, was a loner with a pseudo darwinist view afterwards, then met Sayaka and saw herself in her. Got a great redemption arc and went on a futile mission to "save" Sayaka which the viewer already suspected was completely impossible. Then died meaninglessly blowing herself up along with what remained of Sayaka. "Hey God, if you are there. My life sucked. So for once, please, let me have a happy dream". What a bleak story arc. Snape. I see lots of people who hate him, but honestly, he and Dumbledore single-handedly brought down Voldemort. Not only that, but after he made the decision to earn Dumbledore that Harry was targeted, he basically set a timer on his life. He spent his whole life protecting the son of the man he hated who stole the live of his life, while working at a job he hates (he always wanted to be the DADA professor), and in the final year of his life, he spent them around people who hated him, who probably would've loved him if they'd known the truth of what he was doing. Sirius black because all through the series of movies you think he’s a right royal git! But as he dies u realise he had a heart and in his way had been watching out for the son of his soulmate until his death (crap so sorry to potter fans! Charlie in Lost  I couldn't help cheering for him in his recovery from addiction and trying to win Claire's affection. He had such a sweet boyish quality to him and then in his final moments tried to warn his friends of the danger they were in. I got really attached to Charlie the first time I watched Lost, and it just felt outta nowhere. Fucking dumbledore man. Shit was so sad. His mother died when he was a child, was adopted into an order without a family, never had a father figure, ended up being consumed by madness trying to save the one he loved and was being manipulated by a dark lord while being lied too and treated like shit by his "friends" The Boss - Metal Gear Solid 3. Chadwick Boseman was an amazing actor, and his passing is really terrible, but I felt this way about the scene even before he passed. The fact that he kept his illness a secret all the way to the end proves that just like BP, Boseman IRL was always willing to help others, even while he is dying. That shit was depressing as hell, you go through the entire campaign with that man and you’re like “Damn this guy’s invincible he can’t die” and then he gets betrayed and killed by Shepherd, one of the other main characters. I think part of it has to do with Spider-Man's death being spoiled for me before I watched, but honestly even if it wasn't I would still be shook. Since Spider-Man's death even shows that you can feel yourself dying, you already know T'Challa was feeling the sting of death. Despite this, he still goes to help Okoye up, saying "Up general, up. Medic Wade in Saving Private Ryan still gives me chills. All of Rogue One hit me hard, but Rook dying just after getting the transmission to Raddus just felt...Different. Pointless. Everyone else in that movie died doing something, their deaths had meaning. Rook just...Got blown up by a grenade thrown by a stormtrooper that probably didn't even realize he was there. When Glenn got smashed in The Walking Dead I was so shocked, and it gave me a gut wrenching feeling to see the special effects. It was a very intense scene where, unfortunately, one of my favorite characters in the series gets brutally disfigured. I saw it coming, but jasper jordan in the 100. it was so upsetting for monty, who had very nearly just lost the love of his life, and then trying for a long time to save his best friend, only to not tell jasper he loved him before jasper died in his arms. shit was heartbreaking Data. I was maybe 15 at the time. My friend and I walked out of the cinema in absolute disbelief. I’m still not settled on whether ‘Picard’ gave me closure or just made me re-live the trauma. Wash from Firefly. He was the most earnest character on the show, and on a lot of shows that would be the annoying role or the Gary Stu. But Alan Tudyk is just infinitely likable, and although there was only a single season of the show, I'd watched that season all the way through so many times to the point where every character felt like family. With Serenity, Book hurt, but Wash was a dagger... And with that, I truly believed it was over. Having grown up on Star Trek TNG, I'd say Data in Nemesis, but that film is all around weak and there was the sense that B4 would be eventually overwritten by Data. All 3 Harry Potter: Hedwig, because how Harry reacted and she was his companion in some of his worst times as well as his familiar from the beginning. Fred Weasley, because it wrecked my heart that somebody from that family died, especially because George lost his other half with Fred. And finally Colin Creevey. Poor, brave, overly enthusiastic Colin, who „looked tiny in death“. I know, he died fighting in a war, it’s normal that innocent people die, but I just couldn’t take his death. The wife in Up! Holy shit, I did not expect Disney to get that dark in the opening of a kid's movie. Other notable ones are Lorenzo Medici from Masters of Florence, as well as the reveal that his missing lover and child had both died. I think it's just that these people are 'alive' but not really and the emotional toll of embracing true death. For us when we are approaching death we don't really get to choose. For them they could continue forever if they choose. It all comes down to them willingly taking a leap into what could be nothing without knowing what comes next (even after having already died) and I find that so unsettling. Think about it, he was sentenced to death for a crime he didn’t do. He knew who it was but was scared to say. He was targeted because of his height and race. He had God’s healing powers too! He could have made a living healing everyone. Instead he had to die a death even the guards regretted. The realisation that he was on the way out hit me hard too. Sayori from Doki Doki literature club I've been able to brush off video game character deaths but because the game had her as your childhood friend I was heartbroken and was shocked Dobby in HP. It seems odd since he isn’t even one of the human characters. He’s a character that had only ever known abuse but still maintained his loyalty and ability to have faith which worked in his favor when he finally found someone worth putting faith in. Not to be too cynical, but I thought it was good for the series that someone died. If they had gone through all that crazy fighting with only some bruises, the series as a whole would just have lost some excitement. Noriaki Kakyoin, people knew that not all the Stardust Crusaders were going to make it out of the final fight with DIO alive, but seeing him, hole in abdomen, flung into a water tower. Unable to speak, and the last things he does are think about his parents, figure out DIO’s ability, and push through the pain to fire one last emerald splash in order to tell Joseph of The Worlds ability. Not gonna lie for some reason, probably because he was my favourite, when Iron Man dies. That hit me pretty hard, especially since I was hoping Captain America would die instead. But fucking devasted doesn't even cover it. I sobbed. I am not proud of it but I fucking sobbed in the theatre and on the way home. Not really death but David Tennant's The Doctor, in Doctor Who. Came fairly out of the blue, and really triggered the Endgame scenario, where a lot of your IG choices seem to really matter as you're no longer playing for Lee anymore, you're playing for Clem's survival. Charles vane in black sails. I 100% expected him to be saved, but then there's no music and he's just hanging there and noone goes to him, I remember just saying no over and over again at the screen. It still gets me when i rewatch, and I know it's gonna happen Rita from Dexter. It was truly unexpected and she died at the hands of the man Dexter should've killed a lot sooner. At least he accepted his death, when he saw that his luck had finally run out. He had no idea who Abby was, but her “Guess.” statement was enough to make it clear that she’s connected to someone he crossed in his past. Bing-bong from Inside Out. The movie spends so much time of his story just talking about how much he loves Riley and how excited he is to see her again. And then when it came down to it, he let himself cease to exist in order for her to be happy again. I was 17 when that movie came out and watching him fade away makes me cry every time. What messes me up is how Ellie grieves throughout it all. If you look through her journal you'll notice how much she pays attention to the eyes of people. It's one of her favorite things. But she spent so much time avoiding Joel she forgot what they look like and any attempt to remember triggers the trauma of him with his head half caved in. You know what’s crazy about that scene? People cracked up when Thor said “I went for the head.” But that line was so insanely tragic. Thor has lost everything and been taunted by Thanos for not going for the head, and when he finally did it was too late for anything but empty revenge. I can never understand why Kishimoto decided to make him die such a meaningless and painful death, given that Konoha didn’t even change much after he died. The patriarchy and the fate which he tried to disobey and fought against for his entire life eventually made him a martyr for something that even wasn’t his own belief. The person whom he saved at the expense of his 17-year-short life became a complete absence of a father, which made the sequel “Boruto” a pratical joke. At that time, I really wanted a dad and Entei was the perfect kind of father figure to me. Also, I looked a lot like Molly, the "adoptive daughter", so it really hit me when he sacrificed himself, because she lost her dad a second time Margaery Tyrell. Yup, Laura Bailey and Travis Willingham, also, he got the role of Mustang because he was a big fan of DBZ, and recognised Laura's name in the credits of an episode, as she was a pretty big name at the agency he also was part of, so he asked the agency for her number trying to get a part in DBZ Michael Cordero in Jane the Virgin (even though it was retconned later) - I loved him and Jane, and after everything they'd overcome to have him die so suddenly was awful :( her scream makes me cry every time. Lennie Small from Of Mice and Men. When Lennie accidentally killed that woman because of his strength, and then had to run away with George, it was already kinda fucked. But then you get to the part where George shoots Lennie in the back of the head because he knew he would’ve faced a much worse death otherwise. That ending was so damn sad but good. Can't believe I had to scroll so far down in the comments before Joyce was mentioned. Truly the most heart-wrenching depiction of a character dealing with death that I could ever imagine. Mike in Breaking Bad, mainly because he never got to say goodbye to his granddaughter, who was the reason he did everything he did. And on top of that, Kaylee never even got the money, so everything Mike did was virtually pointless. The moment Walt killed him was the moment I knew I hated Walt Awww, guys! Yeah, I read A Game of Thrones in 1999 or 2000. When Ned was decapitated I thought, "that can't be right". I re-read that paragraph three times thinking I was missing something. Nope. He ded. I heard when it originally aired, Nick moved Korra to a different time slot because the backlash from that scene was so intense. I remember watching that and thinking "Did they just do what I think they did?" A lot of deaths on that show are pretty gruesome, but after that scene, the writers couldn't use the word death or show the exact moment of death because they were afraid Nick would pull the plug on the show. The part of Hans death that gets me is the fact he didn’t fight it. Once he was stabbed the last thing he did was hold his son before he fell. Then the moment where you see his eyes where you can see he’s horrified but still care for Ben hurts. The cherry on top was seeing chewy scream after witnessing his best friend die. PAIN Rob stark. The death of Arthur Morgan. I’ve played RD1, I knew Arthur was probably going to die, and it still hurt. The moment he was diagnosed with TB, my heart sank. His death was perfect too. When Arthur thanked his horse, you could feel his story coming to an end. When he finally died (bad ending, helped John), I just felt gutted. Shot in the mud and betrayed by his kind, Arthur died as he lived; an outlaw clinging to life, fighting until the last breath. Shireen from Game of Thrones. She was a child and she died a horrible death. Everyone around her was more worthy of dying, not her. And the actress' screams broke my heart For me, the moment I knew this would hit differently was the moment seconds before he dies where he still refuses to give up fighting while standing on the stairs, mouth agape and looking like he is going to burst into tears at any second. His final speech where he announces that he is no longer afraid of death and screams "THIS IS THE HUMAN SPIRIT" was so uncharacteristically poetic it was glorious. Gamora in Infinity War. I know almost no one cares about her, at least that's what most marvel "fans" tell me whenever I bring her up, but she was one of my favorites. She had an extremely rough childhood, fighting her own sister for survival (Nebula also deserved better), being hated by everybody for obeying Thanos and his partners, until she found the guardians. They formed such a disfunctional team, but that's what made them original. The look in her eyes when she realizes she is going to fall, Thanos' sadness of sacrificing the one person he viewed as more than a servant, everything in that scene . Dr Greene in ER. Probably because he was a very strong, foundational and well written character, and the lead up to his death was just so awful and gut wrenching. I still dread watching the end of season 8 because I just ugly cry through several episodes. But man, what a great show. When Fitz died in AoS I cried.... It wasnt so much that it was a sad death, but there was no lead up, it just kind of happened. In the same vein, Enoch as well; an otherwise immortal creature who willingly sacrificed himself so the rest of them could get away, such a beautiful scene. Meruem & Komugi from Hunter × Hunter. As for why, I think the character arcs were just so well executed, but it leaves you feeling so empty. There is no big chance for redemption after the change, just a slow, tragic, death. Sybil Crawley, then followed by Matthew that same season on Downton Abbey. Unbelievable after all these seasons of plot and character development to lose two huge characters, and the manner of deaths were equally devastating. Brom from the book Eragon. I know, I know...classic father figure gets killed plot. But there's a reason it works so well as a story device. I think there are plenty of people out there who wish they had had those kinds of experiences with their parent, at least subconsciously. The funeral and all was kind of cheesy but I can never help shed some tears reading it, even nowadays. The homeless man from Groundhog Day. The dad character in Onward. I lost my father to Suicide 10 years ago so I am nearly always hyper aware of characters who experience a death of a parent in a film. Though the death occurred before the film, the idea of bringing back a loved one for a day really triggered me. I took it personally but I got so mad that I couldn’t do that with my dad because I still have so many questions and so many things I want to do with him... Being really close to my sister and becoming engrossed in the story, I was thoroughly upset by this choice in how the story played out. Truly heartbreaking and really just kind of made me take off those rose colored glasses. When I read this when they first came out I felt that we were young and invincible. Roughly 10 years later I know how much that truly steeled me to the way our lives can be fleeting. I would still lose all possibility to function without my sister, but it doesn't matter how much I try and protect her, shit still happens. Yeah, it's brutal to just watch him truly shut down for the first time. A connection that strong with someone was all he ever wanted. If it weren't for the bonds he created with people like Iruka and Shikamaru, who knows where the story would've gone, probably in a darker tone like Nagato's Finnick Odair from the Hunger Game Series. His death in the books hit me harder than the movies but it hurt all the same. The kid deserved a fucking break. Grew up with no parents and in a village that resented him. He worked his tail off and made people respect him and realize he's not a monster through hard work and determination alone. Midway through Part I, Jiraiya enters his life, becomes a strong father figure (though he does have his flaws), and then he's killed in Part II.
